ผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ ดร.สุวิชาน พัฒนาไพรวัลย์ หน่วยวิจัยนิเวศปัญญาชาติพันธุ์และชนเผ่าพื้นเมืองเพื่อการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน สำนักวิชาศิลปศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยแม่ฟ้าหลวง ได้รับเชิญจาก Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) ให้เข้าร่วมการประชุมวิชาการระดับภูมิภาคหัวข้อ Regional Exchange on Indigenous Integrated Fire Stewardship Practices and Knowledge ณ Kathmandu ประเทศ Nepal ระหว่างวันที่ 20–24 เมษายน 2569

การประชุมครั้งนี้เป็นเวทีวิชาการที่มุ่งเน้นการแลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้และประสบการณ์ด้านการจัดการไฟ เชิงบูรณาการบนฐานภูมิปัญญาชนเผ่าพื้นเมือง (Indigenous Integrated Fire Stewardship) โดยมีผู้เข้าร่วมจากกลุ่มชนเผ่าพื้นเมืองในภูมิภาคเอเชียที่ทำงานเกี่ยวข้องกับประเด็นไฟในมิติทางสังคมวัฒนธรรม ตลอดจนผู้เชี่ยวชาญและเจ้าหน้าที่ของ FAO ทั้งจากสำนักงานใหญ่ ณ กรุงโรม และสำนักงานภูมิภาคเอเชีย

ในบริบทของการแลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้ดังกล่าว ผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ ดร.สุวิชาน ได้นำเสนอผลงานวิจัยเรื่อง “The Dynamics of Fire Stewardship as Constituted through Ethnic Knowledge Systems and Situated Practices in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand” ซึ่งเป็นการศึกษาวิเคราะห์พลวัตของการจัดการไฟในฐานะกระบวนการที่ก่อรูปผ่านระบบความรู้ชาติพันธุ์และการปฏิบัติการเชิงพื้นที่ (situated practices) ในจังหวัดเชียงราย งานวิจัยนี้ได้รับการสนับสนุนทุนจากสำนักงานการวิจัยแห่งชาติ (วช.) ประจำปีงบประมาณ 2568–2569 และมีนัยสำคัญต่อการขยายกรอบคิดด้านการจัดการไฟจากมิติเทคนิคสู่มิติทางสังคม-วัฒนธรรมและนิเวศความรู้ (ecologies of knowledge)

นอกจากการนำเสนอเชิงวิชาการแล้ว ผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ ดร.สุวิชาน พัฒนาไพรวัลย์ ยังมีการถ่ายทอดมิติทางวัฒนธรรมผ่านการแสดงดนตรีของชนเผ่าปกาเกอะญอ ซึ่งสะท้อนความสัมพันธ์เชิงจิตวิญญาณระหว่างมนุษย์กับภูมิทัศน์ไฟ (fire landscape) อันเป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญของระบบนิเวศวัฒนธรรม (cultural ecology) การนำเสนอในลักษณะดังกล่าวได้เปิดพื้นที่ให้เกิดความเข้าใจข้ามศาสตร์ (transdisciplinary understanding) และเชื่อมโยงองค์ความรู้เชิงวิชาการเข้ากับประสบการณ์ชีวิตของชุมชนชาติพันธุ์อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม

การเข้าร่วมประชุมครั้งนี้นับเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกระบวนการสร้างบทสนทนาระดับภูมิภาคเกี่ยวกับบทบาทของชนเผ่าพื้นเมืองในฐานะ “ผู้ดูแลไฟ” (fire stewards) ซึ่งมิได้จำกัดอยู่เพียงการควบคุมหรือป้องกันไฟ หากแต่ครอบคลุมถึงการจัดการภูมิทัศน์ การธำรงความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพ และการรักษาสมดุลระหว่างมนุษย์กับธรรมชาติในระยะยาว ผ่านกรอบคิดที่ตั้งอยู่บนฐานสิทธิ ความรู้ และอธิปไตยทางวัฒนธรรมของชนเผ่าพื้นเมืองอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ

MFU Academic Presents Indigenous Fire Management Knowledge at FAO Regional Forum in Nepal

Assistant Professor Dr. Suwichan Phattanapraiwan, from the Research Unit for Indigenous and Ethno-Ecological Wisdom for Sustainable Development : RIEW-SD, School of Liberal Arts, Mae Fah Luang University, was invited by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to participate in the regional academic exchange titled "Regional Exchange on Indigenous Integrated Fire Stewardship Practices and Knowledge." The event is being held in Kathmandu, Nepal, from April 20–24, 2026.

A Platform for Integrated Fire Stewardship
This forum serves as a vital academic space for exchanging knowledge and experiences regarding Indigenous Integrated Fire Stewardship. The gathering brings together:

Indigenous groups from across Asia working on fire management through socio-cultural lenses.

Experts and officials from the FAO Headquarters in Rome.

Representatives from the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

Research Highlights
During the exchange, Asst. Prof. Dr. Suwichan presented his research titled:

"The Dynamics of Fire Stewardship as Constituted through Ethnic Knowledge Systems and Situated Practices in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand."

Supported by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) for the 2025–2026 fiscal years, this study analyzes how fire management is shaped by ethnic knowledge systems and localized practices. The research is significant for expanding the framework of fire management beyond technical dimensions into the realms of socio-cultural contexts and ecologies of knowledge.

Cultural Expression and Transdisciplinary Understanding
In addition to the academic presentation, Asst. Prof. Dr. Suwichan shared cultural insights through a Pga k’nyau (Karen) musical performance. This performance reflected the spiritual relationship between humans and the "fire landscape"—a core element of cultural ecology. This approach fostered a transdisciplinary understanding, effectively bridging academic theory with the lived experiences of ethnic communities.

The Role of Indigenous Peoples as "Fire Stewards"
Participation in this meeting is a key step in fostering a regional dialogue on the role of Indigenous Peoples as "fire stewards." This role extends far beyond mere fire control or prevention; it encompasses:

Human-Nature Balance: Ensuring long-term harmony through a framework grounded in rights, traditional knowledge, and cultural sovereignty.
