In martial arts, weight cutting is a short-term strategy where athletes temporarily reduce their weight before a competition. This process typically involves reducing water weight through dehydration by limiting water intake, using exercise or saunas to sweat out fluids, and sometimes adjusting diet to lower glycogen stores and food volume. The primary goal is to weigh in at a lower weight class for a competitive edge. After the weigh-in, athletes then rehydrate and refuel to restore strength and energy levels before the match.

In contrast, long-term weight loss focuses on sustainable fat loss achieved through gradual changes in diet, exercise, and lifestyle. This approach prioritises maintaining muscle mass, overall health, and optimal performance, without the severe dehydration or rapid weight fluctuations seen in weight cutting. Long-term weight loss aims to build consistent habits for improved body composition, rather than quick, temporary weight manipulation.

Key Difference: Weight cutting is a temporary process often involving rapid dehydration, while long-term weight loss is a gradual, sustainable approach targeting lasting improvements in body composition.
