It was twenty-two years ago when I started my practice in Saudi Arabia. My homeland was very different then, and at age thirty-three, against all odds, I opened my own design office. People say that your work is not your family. I beg to differ, as my work was the only guiding light when everything else had failed me; it was my lifeline. I recall not knowing what each day would bring, but I continued with much love and faith. I believe it was this unwavering belief that things would have to get better that pushed me to the limits; besides, I had nothing else to lose. Three years later, I found myself right here in the central atrium of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). I was too young to understand what it meant and where it would take me. I was naive but determined, ready to fight and endure, and endure I did! From my first project, I was committed and took on each challenge as if my life depended on it. It was not long until I earned credibility and, with it, the respect I yearned for. Twenty-two years later, it’s a new era for my country, and I find myself in Riyadh, at MOFA’, standing in its breathtaking central Atrium once again. This time I am older, and the leadership is younger. This time I am here to guide, lead and inspire. I can’t express the feeling of this beautiful homecoming, where I see a generation of young female designers working at MOFA. We have come a long way, and the future is bright and hopeful. I am so proud to be here, to witness this change, and be included in building a stronger future for our country. It’s good to be home!..
