Frontotemporal dementia is a neurodegenerative disease that primarily affects the areas of the brain associated with decision making, behavior, speech, and comprehension. Because of this, the disease does not always start with memory loss. Sometimes, the very first signs are changes in a person's behavior, difficulty empathizing, or alterations in their speech.
While some individuals may struggle to find the right words, others might exhibit significant changes in their social behavior. In the early stages, these symptoms can easily be mistaken for conditions like stress, depression, or simple personality changes. However, sudden behavioral shifts and language difficulties, especially when they begin in middle age, require careful medical evaluation.
Early awareness in frontotemporal dementia is crucial to prevent delays in diagnosis. Although it is not yet possible to completely halt the progression of the disease, proper monitoring, supportive therapies, and expert guidance can take vital steps toward maintaining quality of life.
