⚠️ This Could Have Been Much Worse…
I passed this motorhome stranded on the side of the highway and decided to turn around and check on them.
What started as a tire blowout turned into a major failure:
Entry steps torn up
Hydraulic lines damaged (leveling + slides)
Diesel filler neck ripped out
Extensive side damage, both inside and outside.
And that’s just what we could see.
The scary part?
This was preventable.
The remaining tires:
~5/32 tread
~6 years old
~40,000+ miles
That’s right in the danger zone for RV tires—especially under heavy loads at highway speeds.
👉 RV tires don’t fail the same way car tires do.
They age out before they wear out.
Thankfully, the driver kept control and got safely to the shoulder. That doesn’t always end that way—especially with families on board.
Here’s the takeaway:
If you own an RV, you should be doing at least an annual inspection that includes:
Tire age (DOT date)
Tread depth
Sidewall condition (cracking/dry rot)
Proper inflation under load
Because when a tire lets go on something this big… it’s not just a flat—it’s a chain reaction.
If you’re not sure what to look for, that’s exactly why I offer inspections.

🚨 “It was working fine last season…” 🚨
That’s what I hear all the time.
Today’s call was for a leveling system failure…
👉 No response from controls
👉 Error messages
👉 Jacks wouldn’t operate
After inspection, the real issue showed up…
🐭 Rodents.
They had chewed through critical wiring underneath the RV, completely disabling the system.
⚠️ A sitting RV is the perfect home for rodents.
Warm. Covered. Undisturbed.
And they don’t just move in… they destroy:
• Wiring harnesses
• Leveling systems
• Slide-outs
• HVAC systems
• Plumbing
💸 Small problem → BIG repair bill.
🔧 What we did on this repair:
✔ Repaired damaged wiring by splicing in new sections
✔ Used weather-resistant (sealed) connections
✔ Installed new protective wire loom
✔ Secured and rerouted wiring for better protection
✔ Sealed vulnerable entry points in the underbelly
✔ Fully tested leveling system to confirm proper operation
✅ System back up and working properly
🚐 Don’t wait until something stops working.
At D&S Custom Conversions, we can:
