Ann Arbor Public Schools Statement on Incident at Haisley Elementary on Friday

January 17, 2026

AAPS Staff and Community,

We are writing to provide information on an incident that occurred Friday during the dismissal process at Haisley Elementary School. The safety of our students and staff is our priority, and we are taking this situation very seriously. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community. We appreciate the quick response from our school administration and staff, as well as the cooperation and support from our families.

Yesterday an individual who resides in the Haisley neighborhood taped a note with threatening language on a classroom window from outside, and then immediately fled the school property. The Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD) responded immediately and took appropriate action. The individual fled the school grounds immediately after the incident and they were taken into custody at their home. There is no ongoing threat to students or staff, and the school remains a safe place for learning. AAPD continues its investigation of the incident, with the full cooperation of Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS).

In addition to the individual being taken into police custody, another immediate step was the issuance of a no-trespass order against the individual, restricting them from all AAPS property. AAPS will continue to work closely with law enforcement to take further legal action to address this situation to the fullest extent.

The Ann Arbor Police Department has released a statement that provides more information linked here.

The AAPD and district leadership will be at Haisley when school resumes on Tuesday. District staff including school social workers and psychologists will be at Haisley to support students and staff.

Sincerely,

Jazz Parks, Superintendent

Melita Alston, Executive Director, Early Childhood and Elementary Education

Liz Margolis, Executive Director, School Safety and District Operations

At the Ann Arbor NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner with Superintendent Parks and fellow Board Members. It was an inspiring and special event of celebration and empowerment, as we honored many outstanding African American high school students in the Ann Arbor Public Schools!

**UPDATE: Father is home worh his family**

Today, I have learned that there was a parent of one of our students taken by ICE in the Lakewood neighborhood. This is absolutely devastating and our school and district team and leadership is currently supporting those impacted. As a community, let’s support and be there for this family.
