Our next workshop is FABRICS 101 with Nissa McKinney this Saturday:
In this workshop, students will learn the basics of choosing fabrics for sewing their own garments. We will discuss fiber content, fabric construction, fabric weight, stretch, and drape and how these characteristics impact our finished garments. Students will be able to begin their own swatch books for fabric reference, and we’ll also discuss some pointers for buying fabric in person and online.
The instructor, Nissa McKinney, began her sewing journey more than ten years ago at a beginner’s class at Community. That class gave her the foundation she needed to start sewing more advanced projects. Today, a large percentage of her wardrobe is handmade - from jeans and t-shirts to coats and dresses. Sewing has become her superpower! When not sewing, she works s a writer for a kids’ science journal, provides shuttle service for her two kids, and squeezes in a dance class or two at Dancefx.

Visible Mending Workshop this Saturday!
Sustainable fashion sewist, Evelyn Russell, will teach you the benefits and techniques of visible mending. This includes instruction on various hand-sewn stitches such as the running stitch, blanket stitch, satin stitch, darning, and sashiko. These techniques guarantee your clothing a longer lifespan and allow you to apply your own creativity to the mending process. No prior hand sewing or mending experience is needed.
This two and a half hour workshop on visible mending will be held on Saturday, July 18th, from 1:00pm - 3:30pm in our sewing area at Community. It is available to ages 18+ with a maximum class size of 10 students.

The instructor, Evelyn Russell, works at Community as a redesigner and seamstress. She is studying Fashion Merchandising and Fabric Design at the University of Georgia and is pursuing a career in sustainable textiles and fashion.
What you’ll need: Please bring two or three well-loved garments that are in need of repair.
Embroidery thread, needles, and fabric patches will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own fabric scraps, if you prefer. This class is on hand-sewn mending techniques and sewing machines will not be used.
