4TH RALLY IN 3 YEARS AGAINST ANTI-ASIAN HATE IN ATLANTA

Atlanta leaders and community members came together at the Georgia Capitol to honor the victims of the Atlanta Asian American 3/16 shootings and raise awareness for violence against AAPI

ATLANTA (March 15, 2024) – Attendees came together to remember the victims of the Atlanta Asian American 3/16 Shootings and to raise awareness for violence against AAPI. Held at the State of Georgia Capitol on March 15, 2024, a day before the third anniversary of the shootings, the fourth Atlanta AAPI 3/16 Rally – - brought together business leaders, nonprofit organizations, grassroots community partners, elected officials and allies to honor the victims and their families while speaking out against Anti-Asian hate in America.

This year’s rally event featured heartfelt speeches from different community perspectives, and included specific calls to action for the AAPI community. Representatives from the offices of U.S. Senator Rev. Rafael Warnock, U.S. Congresswoman Lucy McBath (GA-6), The State of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, the City of Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and the Anti-Defamation League Southeast offered their support to the AAPI community.

In addition to the rally’s moving speeches, attendees observed a moment of silence for the all the victims: Xiaojie Tan, 49, Yong Yue, 63, Daoyou Feng, 44, Hyun Jung Grant, 51, Suncha Kim, 69, Soon Chung Park, 74, Delaina Yaun-Gonzalez, 33, and Paul Andre Michels, 54.

On March 16, 2021, a gunman killed 8 victims in Atlanta, targeting 3 Asian-owned businesses. Six of the victims were Asian American women. In response, on March 26, 2021, the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association (GAPABA), the GAPABA Law Foundation, and the Korean American Bar Association of Georgia - Kabaga, in partnership with National Compassion Fund (NCF), launched the AAPI Crime Victims and Education Fund, which seeks to prevent bias-motivated violence against the AAPI community and assist victims in the aftermath of such crimes.

The Fund provides financial assistance to AAPI crime victims anywhere in the United States and supports educational and awareness programs aimed at reducing violence targeted towards the AAPI community. The Fund was initially overseen by the GAPABA Law Foundation (“GLF”), the nonprofit arm of the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association (GAPABA), but is now independently run by a volunteer Executive Board of several Board members of GAPABA and GLF. The Fund is currently available on a nationwide basis to provide financial assistance to AAPI crime victims and to support educational and awareness programs aimed at reducing violence targeted towards the AAPI community.
