Today, we're sharing the amazing works of Gwendolyn Brooks, a trailblazing poet, and the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize. "She was also the first Black woman to hold the role of Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, a position now referred to as the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, and served as the Illinois poet laureate for 32 years!" Her poetry reflects the struggles and issues of her time, including the Civil Rights Movement and the economy. One of her poems, "A Song in the Front Yard" speaks to life in the city:

I’ve stayed in the front yard all my life.
I want a peek at the back
Where it’s rough and untended and hungry w**d grows.
A girl gets sick of a rose.
