Move-In Day Mafia
WHAT WE DO
Just as the original mafia takes care of its own, MIDM deploys to HBCU campuses to take care of OUR own. Enter the Move-In Day Mafia! We need YOU!
If you found us through HBCU Bingo or caught us on the news, welcome. WE ARE GLAD YOU'RE HERE!
Today kicks off our monthly Week!
Once a month, we pull together as a family, based on our budget, to cover our scholars' basic needs. Toiletries. Snacks. Household items. Things as low as $3.
I woke up this morning with one word floating up from my subconscious before I even opened my eyes.
Choices.
Our scholars grow up without them. Not the big ones. The small ones.
Which shampoo smells good. Which toothpaste to grab. Whether to get the deodorant they actually like or the one that's $.79.
Most of us pick without thinking.
There's a young woman who spent years being shuffled through fifteen different foster homes. No choice.
There's a young woman who left home at fourteen after years of abuse and has largely been on her own ever since. No choice.
And then there's one of our babies who used to sleep behind an AutoZone. No choice.
That same young woman just bought her first car. All by herself. Unfortunately she still doesn't have stable housing, but at least now she has somewhere to lay her head if she isn't able to crash with a friend.
Some of our scholars are in what we call Summer Survival Mode right now. They're between cities, in programs, or in living situations where a package delivery isn't stable because they aren't sure how long they will be there. So instead of Amazon Wishlists items, we send $25 Visa gift cards via priority mail so they can get what they need, wherever they are.
If you want to help a scholar choose what they need this month, please visit MoveInDayMafia.org/AdoptAScholar (LINK IN BIO). Items start at $3.
