Respect 🧕🏻 Posted • Before I had these two munchkins I had reservations about raising confident Muslim children in America. Western society was changing and evolving rapidly year after year and not necessarily for the better. With the limited resources and the suffocating pressure to assimilate and conform I felt growing up, how would I ever instill the love of Islam in my children? I had mentally prepared myself for a life long struggle of “us” against “them.”

Until it happened. My children came into the world and suddenly I noticed a shift. It was like being surrounded by the blooming of flowers after spring showers. I found other individuals that shared my concerns and vision. And those individuals did something about it. Each one brought a different hue, a different texture to paint our lifeless world of Muslim media to shine ever so brilliantly. They are the stories, the animation, the literature, the fashion, the businesses and technology we are so blessed with today. •

Being Muslim in America was no longer a label we struggled to live up to. It had become a way of life like it was always meant to be. It was no longer a struggle against “us” vs. “them” but rather a communion of us with them, each standing their own with pride, not overshadowed by the other.
