Dr. KING. Much more than just a dreamer...A real Change Maker. He was a catalyst for change by leading nonviolent protests against Jim Crow laws, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches. He Organized the March on Washington, where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington in 1963. He founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC): King and other Black church leaders founded the SCLC to organize nonviolent protests. He advocated for voter registration, and planned voter registration drives.
He supported the Memphis sanitation workers' strike, traveling to Memphis, Tennessee in 1968 to support the strike.

Dr. King helped to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. His legacy includes a model for how to combat inequality, which many non-violent groups use as a basis for their work today.

In 1977, Dr. King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1983, Congress established Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, with all 50 states observing it by 2000. MLK Day is celebrated annually on the third Monday in January. In 2011, a national memorial of Dr. King was erected in Washington, D.C. (NAACP)
