Medgar Evers served as the first state field secretary of the NAACP in Mississippi. His work was inherently dangerous traveling around the state recruiting members and reregistering people to vote. Medgar Evers was killed June 12, 1963 after pulling into his driveway at his home in Mississippi, three weeks shy of his 38th birthday.
