When I started HeART, the response to the art was “I want that!” And “I would buy that!” ❤️ I didn’t create HeART with the intention to sell the artwork. It was a response to a demand that I was happy to help meet as I saw it was for the greater good of the artists, the community and the business. I also know as an artist myself, that it feels great to share and sell your work! But we don’t do art sessions with the intention of creating art to sell. We do a session with the intention to create art -process art, the focus on process not product. I’ve learned from experience that nothing taints the mood of a session more than trying to create art that will sell. That’s why we dont even take commissions, though we have tried. I always stay open minded to the ideas of the community because leading a non profit means meeting the needs of the community you are serving. In my delivery of process art is the philosopy that through process and sensory driven art, individuals with disabilities and unique abilities are able to create art just like any other “typical” artist. Through Heart, I wanted the people I was working with to be seen as artists, not individuals with disabilities. HeART artists are deserving of having their art sell, like any other artist. However what started out as things I was happy to do because they brought more opportunity to the artist (like running the online shop and preparing inventory for vending at shows) have become a drain on my mental, creative and physical energy. I’ve been going in a circle with it for a long time now- trying to make the negatives into something positive and productive because again, I think selling the art is a wonderful thing for the artist and the community. I’m grappling with some guilt that I don’t want to be behind the logistics of that selling process right now. I’m happy to say I have tried. Which leads me to the tough decision that for now, I am closing the HeART shop online and will not have HeART participate in shows or markets this season. We will still be creating amazing art as usual and please make sure to check out our last few posts about our exciting new ViewBoard ❤️
