Should Jackson create a bike lane?

Author: Jayla Perkins

Jackson, Ga - The City of Jackson discussed a potential bike lane that would start at The Creeks Recreational Trail System on Brownlee Road and end near the old City of Jackson Police Department, with hopes of bringing more activity and revenue into the square.

Currently, the city offers mountain biking through a route that starts on Brownlee Road and connects to Dauset Trails. Jackson also hosts the Outdoor Capital Classic Bike Race.

However, Mayor Carlos Duffey said he does not see the bike lane as feasible at the moment.

“Taking one side of Brownlee will create more of an issue,” Duffey said. “ I just don’t want us to spend money on something that’s not going to be utilized. If we had a big community of road cyclists, I ride a road bike, that’s a different thing.”

While GDOT works on the truck bypass roundabout, officials proposed adding a bike lane, with the city only responsible for covering the cost of paint.

No decision was finalized.
