Project SKILLS offers you and your child (up to age 10) two months of free individualized intervention at the UT Speech and Hearing Center. Parents work with UT clinical faculty and graduate clinicians to learn techniques to facilitate interaction, language, and play.

The course will utilize the parent training curriculum developed by Ingersoll & Dvortcsak (2010). This curriculum teaches parents to use a combination of developmental and behavioral strategies to increase their children’s social communication skills. Guiding principles of this intervention include: (1) Intervention is naturalistic, (2) Typical development is used to guide selection of treatment targets, and (3) children learn social communication through interaction with responsive caregivers.
Families will participate in group and individual sessions for 8 weeks (attending 1 session per week). We conduct 1 opening group session that will last approximately 2-hours and each individual session will last 1-hour. During the opening session, we meet with all enrolled parents in small groups (parents only) and go over introductory information. The subsequent seven individual sessions, tailored to each family, involve 1-2 graduate student clinicians, the participating parent, and child to cover detailed lecture, demonstration, and coaching over these specific skills.

Don’t have a lot of time? It’s only a one hour per week commitment to meet directly with us at UT for the 8 weeks. Typically, this is the same time each week. We have many afterschool timeslots to help meet your schedule. Then, you can implement the techniques at home at any time that works for you.

Can’t make it to UT campus? No problem! We can video conference with you using our secure software! All you need is a computer with we**am, iPad, tablet, or smart phone! We can even help you with that if you need to borrow one. Any family in Texas is eligible for this training course. We also provide services in Spanish and several other languages.
If you are interested in enrolling in our next session, please click on the following link to our scheduling survey for our next session starting in March:
