American Hearts — A.A. Bondy, 2007. He recorded it in a barn in the Catskills, and it was written as a protest song that doesn’t shout. It earned critical respect but never got its moment. I’ve loved it for years, and I think it says more about right now than most songs written this year. Not a perfect take — missed a word or two — but this one’s about the message, not the polish.
