Years ago, I was handling publicity for a fledgling nonprofit working in Uganda. They were expanding a school’s infrastructure, helping fund education and build housing for students (many who had lost parents due to the AIDS crisis), and provide medical and dental services.

I did my job. I earned coverage for the nonprofit. Secured interviews with its founder. Told the story as best I could, based on press materials, photos, and the founder’s passion.

But I knew something was missing.
I couldn’t feel it. And I couldn’t see it.
Not in the way I knew I needed to.

One day I came to a realization. I needed to go there and see it firsthand.

A few months later, I traveled to Uganda with the founder and a small group of volunteers.

After two long-haul flights, a three-hour drive from Entebbe, and a stop at the equator, I was finally there.

I walked the school grounds and surrounding village.
Met the village elders.
And spent time with the students I had only ever seen in pixelated images.

That’s when everything changed.

When I returned home, the way I told the story was completely different.
It wasn’t just about stats or mission statements.
It was about people. Emotion. Moments.
Most importantly, it was real.

The months (and years) following proved this wasn’t just in theory. We immediately began securing much more substantial coverage than before, and in more impressive national and international outlets.

The organization was able to raise more funds and credibility, and awards, all of which benefited the school, its students, and the surrounding region.

It proved to me that a publicist and brand storyteller excels when the story comes from within.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re publicizing the work of an NGO, a CPG brand, or a tech product. It’s all about the story you’re telling...and selling. And the way to truly understand and sell a brand’s story and value prop is to be immersed in it.

I’ve carried that lesson with me ever since.
