The U.S. average price for a gallon of diesel fuel has fallen once more after three months of almost continuous declines, but gasoline is up slightly, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Diesel was down 7.5 cents for the week of Sept. 26 to $4.889 per gallon, sinking further below the $5 mark since last week, according to EIA. The U.S. average for trucking's main fuel, however, was heavily influenced by a precipitous 11.4-cent decline in the Midwest. Other regions of the nation were down but much less, according to EIA data, seeing their prices drop between 4 cents and 7 cents.

Diesel has been trending downward since it set a record of $5.81 per gallon the week of June 20. The nationwide average, even after those months of mostly uninterrupted declines, is still $1.483 more expensive than it was a year ago, according to EIA.
Motor club AAA, which releases its data daily whereas EIA’s releases weekly, pegged a gallon of diesel at $4.89 per gallon on Sept. 27, a penny drop from the day before. The Sept. 27 price represents a 4.6-cent drop from the prior week, a 14.8-cent drop from the previous month, and a 92.6-cent decrease from AAA’s recorded high of $5.816 per gallon on June 19. The average price for Sept. 27 of last year was $3.315 per gallon, $1.575 lower than the current price.
The price of diesel dropped in every region of the country, according to EIA data. The Midwest's 11.4-cent drop was the sharpest while the West Coast, which is historically the most expensive place in the country for fuel, saw its prices decline the least, 4.5 cents. The West Coast is the only major region of the country with prices above $5, sitting at $5.567 per gallon, according to the Sept. 26 EIA data. California’s prices skew this number higher, as they still sit above the $6 mark at $6.11 per gallon. The West Coast, less California, is still slightly above $5, however, at $5.094.

For others, today officially is a time to pause and appreciate the hardworking men and women who make up this country's workforce. And, that includes America's professional truck drivers.

Labor Day 2022 comes at a time when the industry is facing a number of issues. Market uncertainty. High diesel prices. The lingering effects of the COVID-pandemic and the specter of another spike in cases as winter looms. Difficulties finding and retaining drivers. A threat to the owner-operator business model. A lack of parking.

However, through it all, truckers do what's expected of them: ensure shipments entrusted to them get to where they're going. Simple as that sounds, it's an accomplishment to be proud of every time it occurs.

So today, Labor Day 2022, whether you're relaxing at home or celebrating the holiday during a break at a truck stop, know that this day belongs to you. Know you're as essential this day as anytime during the worst of the pandemic.
