Today, we pause to remember Sergeant Derrick S. Leto of the Worcester Police Department, who passed away on March 17, 2023. His service, dedication, and commitment to protecting others will never be forgotten. Behind the badge was a person who showed up day after day for his community—often in ways the public never sees.

As we honor Sgt. Leto’s memory, we are reminded of a truth that cannot be ignored: the weight carried by law enforcement officers is immense. Across Massachusetts and beyond, officers face not only the physical dangers of the job, but also the emotional and psychological toll that comes with it—trauma, stress, long hours, and the constant exposure to crisis.

For too long, mental health in policing has been a conversation pushed to the background. Today, we bring it forward.

It is okay for officers to not be okay. Strength is not measured by silence—it’s measured by the willingness to seek help, to talk, and to support one another. Departments, leadership, and communities all play a role in ensuring that those who protect us have access to the resources, peer support, and professional care they deserve.

At Crime Trackers Massachusetts, we stand with every officer who continues to serve while carrying unseen burdens. We encourage open dialogue, we advocate for mental health awareness, and we honor those we have lost by working to protect those still on the job.

Sgt. Leto’s legacy is not only one of service—it is also a call to action. To check in on one another. To break the stigma. To ensure that no officer feels alone.
