Why Does Epoxy Peel Under Your Tires? (And How to Stop It)

There is nothing more frustrating than investing in a "protected" garage floor only to have it peel off under your tires a few months later. This is called "hot tire pickup," and it’s a common issue with low-grade DIY kits.

Here’s why it happens and how we prevent it at Gator Epoxy Solutions:

1. The "Heat & Cool" Cycle
When you drive home, your tires are hot from the Florida pavement. As they cool, they physically contract. If the coating isn't chemically bonded to the concrete, that cooling rubber "grabs" the epoxy and literally pulls it off the floor as you pull out the next morning.

2. Surface Prep vs. "Cleaning"
Most DIY kits suggest just acid etching. This isn't enough. We use industrial diamond grinders to open the "pores" of the concrete. This allows the epoxy to soak deep into the slab, creating a mechanical bond that tires can't break.

3. Industrial Chemistry
We use high-solids resins and polyaspartic topcoats engineered to be heat-stable. Unlike water-based paints, our systems don’t soften or get "tacky" when hot tires sit on them.

A floor shouldn't just look good when it’s empty—it should look good when you’re actually using it.
