The biggest skill a DJ can have has nothing to do with pushing buttons, beatmatching, or having the biggest music library.

It’s observation.

Everybody talks about “reading the room,” but the truth is, it goes way deeper than watching who’s dancing and who’s sitting.

When I meet with a couple months before their wedding, I’m paying attention to things they don’t even realize they’re telling me.

The way a bride lights up when she talks about her grandfather.

The story behind a song that everybody else at the table forgot about.

The best man mentioning that one college anthem that instantly takes the whole friend group back 10 years.

The quiet guest standing off to the side who just needs the right song to become the life of the party.

Those little details matter.

Because my job isn’t just playing music.

My job is creating moments.

A great wedding reception isn’t built from a Spotify playlist. It’s built from understanding people. Understanding relationships. Understanding family dynamics. Understanding when to crank the energy to the ceiling and when to slow things down so people can soak in a memory.

While everyone else is enjoying the party, I’m watching.

I’m watching reactions.

I’m watching energy shifts.

I’m watching who’s engaged and who’s fading.

I’m remembering conversations from six months ago.

I’m connecting dots that don’t seem connected.

And I’m making hundreds of decisions throughout the night based on what I see.

That’s why great DJing looks easy.

Because if I’m doing my job right, nobody notices the work.

They just remember how they felt.

They remember Grandma dancing.

They remember singing with their friends at the top of their lungs.

They remember looking around the room and thinking, “Man… this is exactly how I hoped this would feel.”
