"Trombonist Conrad Herwig says his Afro-Caribbean masters were Mario Bauza, Eddie Palmieri, and Tito Puente. Conrad spent time with all three, giving him more than enough creative pedigree, when later he would regale us with his 'Latin Side Of' series, reimagining and playing forward works by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Horace Silver, Charles Mingus, and now, Chick Corea. Chick, who played early on with Mongo Santamaria, was consistently fond of the Afro-Caribbean sound, and you can hear it in a lot of his work. Still, with Conrad's salute to Chick, the music here gets a fresh coat of clave, in some places for an initial experience." - Gary Walker, WBGO - New Day New Play
"this band remains one of New York’s most authoritative ensembles—an All-Star outfit whose collective bandstand mileage is measured in decades rather than years . . . Herwig himself is a marvel. Moreover, his tone proves umbrous and humane, a baritone confidence coupled with lyric grace, with a slide articulation that finds the precise consonant attack one associates with the very best mainstream players . . . Finally, the band offered a tantalizing glimpse of The Latin Side of Chick Corea, Herwig’s upcoming Savant Records release dropping July 3, 2026. A reading of Chick Corea‘s Matrix—a 1968 gem few besides Chick have dared revisit—suggested that volume nine in this remarkable series will arrive with the same authority and joy that defined the night. Audiences ought to mark their calendars; on the strength of What was previewed at Dizzy’s, this album promises to be a worthy entry in a catalog already brimming with riches."- Edward Kliszus, Opening Night/The Front Row Center

Matt Slocum Presents: A Revolving Alliance Featuring Slocum with Rising Star Emmanuel Michael (guitar) & The Legendary Larry Grenadier (bass)
Available Worldwide Now on Sunnyside Records
" . . . Larry Grenadier — fourth appearance on a Slocum date, the man whose 25-year Mehldau tenure is reason enough to clear the diary — anchors the centre. Emmanuel Michael, the youngest voice and already a fixture in Ambrose Akinmusire’s circle, occupies the left channel with startling clarity and a harmonic vocabulary that nods to Lage Lund . . . Slocum takes the right channel and takes up less space than you’d expect. Six of seven cuts are first takes — and you can hear it. The title track, built from a winding bass line in mixed meters rather than a melody, lets Grenadier do the cartography. 'Yerazel' (Armenian for 'to dream') is the quiet heart of the record. Closer 'A Dissolving Alliance' — a title first used on Sanctuary, now recast for darker times — takes everything apart . . . Slocum is not the obvious jazz drummer of his generation — not flashy, no long solos, does not 'stand out' in the conventional sense. What he does instead is write music that lets extraordinary musicians sound even more extraordinary . . . A composer’s record, played by three of the most attentive listeners in modern jazz, captured with the kind of care that was once the rule rather than the exception . . . Essential. A modern reference pressing." – Steve Williams, UKVibe
"Slocum’s latest project leans fully into original compositions, creating a cohesive and immersive listening experience. The chemistry between the trio is
palpable, with six of the seven tracks captured in first takes—preserving a raw, unfiltered energy that mirrors the immediacy of live performance. . . . the session unfolded with a sense of unpredictability that brought out unexpected creative instincts from all three musicians . . . A Revolving Alliance stands as a testament to Slocum’s evolving vision—music that is introspective yet expansive, technically intricate yet emotionally direct, and above all, rooted in genuine artistic connection."– Jazz Chill Music
As a follow-up to his critically-acclaimed recording, Lion Dance (Sunnyside, 2024), Matt Slocum presents a new, telepathic trio on A Revolving Alliance. Featuring legendary bassist Larry Grenadier and rising star guitarist Emmanuel Michael, the multigenerational ensemble explores a distinctive set of original music with empathy and verve. This is Grenadier’s fourth appearance on a Slocum-led recording (“I feel that our connection has deepened with each project, and it has been inspiring to record with Larry in settings ranging from piano trio, to quartet, sax trio, and now in this current format with Emmanuel,” said Slocum). It marks the first time that Slocum or Grenadier has recorded with Emmanuel Michael (Ambrose Akinmusire, Gerald Clayton, Marcus Gilmore, etc.), whom Slocum views as “an artist who can reimagine the possibilities of the art form and their instrument”. https://conta.cc/4vZhY8j
