. The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), established by the Judiciary Act of 1789 and signed into law by President George Washington, has served as the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. The original 13 U.S. Marshals were appointed on September 24, 1789.
USMS plays a vital role in enforcing federal laws and supporting the federal justice system through judicial security, fugitive investigations, asset forfeiture, prisoner operations and transportation, and witness protection.
The USMS launched the 15 Most Wanted Fugitive Program in 1983 to focus on capturing the country’s most dangerous fugitives. Since its inception, 248 fugitives from the list have been arrested.
