Q***r theory’s great gift was performativity — the idea that gender is produced through repeated acts, not possessed as an essence. Quare theory’s great question was: produced by whom, and in whose body? Both are true. Only one of them asked about race and class.

“Quare” is how E. Patrick Johnson’s grandmother said “queer” in her Black Southern dialect. He kept the pronunciation on purpose. The difference in sound carries a difference in knowledge. That is an epistemological claim, not a typo.

The view from nowhere is a position. When a theory speaks for “all bodies” while quietly modeling one kind of body, it has not escaped particularity — it has universalized a particular and then forgotten it did. Q***r theory loved to talk about the body. It rarely talked about the bodies that are raced, classed, bruised, and hungry. Quare theory is the difference between those two sentences.
