Make A Stand Bully Rescue

We always think of summertime as the perfect time to adopt, but truth is… we see less adoptions over the summer than most traditionally “slow” months - like January and February! What kills us, though, is that we have puppies growing up in foster in our rescue, rather than a loving adoptive home. *THIS* is the time where bonds are first formed - and they should be formed with an adopter. Java (female, red & white pittie mix, pictured) is one of MANY puppies in our program needing placement… and the need for our support doesn’t end - for the spot Java is taking prevents hundreds of other puppies in need from finding respite. “Kinley healed all of us in so many ways…” 💔

It brings us great sorrow to share the news that Kinley Mae - Mama McKinley to our “POTUS” Litter - has passed away. 💔

Fostering brought foster mom Heather into our lives, but Kinley made us friends - close friends - and her loss leaves an immense hole in the hearts of many.

We often speak of “soul dogs” and “heart dogs,” here at MAS Bully Rescue. And we also share a lot of the private, intimate details of the dogs who have saved our lives; and maybe saved them more than once or twice.

And while that’s not our story to tell, Kinley Mae was that dog - and more - for mama Heather and her two daughters, Madison and Reagan.

Kinley entered Heather’s life as one of her very first foster dogs. And not just mama, but all of her puppies, too. And man were they beautiful! All of the babies got homes quickly, but Kinley took a little longer. Beautiful, but with a spicy personality, every time she had a potential home, she’d “screw it up.” But it was only a few months later where Heather realized that Kinley was “screwin’ up her chances,” because she was already home; she was already serving a lifelong purpose.

She became Heather’s constant.
Regardless of life’s ups and downs - and lord knows, Heather has experienced some of the most amazing “ups” and some of the most devastating “downs” - Kinley Mae was there.

Always.
With her gentle heart and calm eyes, Kinley was able to bring Heather back to “center.”

She watched as both of Heather’s daughters graduated and began their “adult” lives - welcoming spouses and grandbabies - and took her role as “foster sister” and “mentor extraordinaire” the most seriously, helping so many dogs in our program find their long way home.

There are truly not enough words to describe the loss of this girl. We always say, “there’s something special about them Mama Dogs” - and Kinley was no exception to that rule. She was - and always will be - an incredibly special dog, whose purpose in life was bigger than we’re sure she ever expected; but always knew.

Her purpose was to protect and love her mama, fiercely. And even in those final moments and days of life, Kinley was there - a constant force and reminder that even when we can no longer “see” her, she will always be there.

Please help us hold Heather and Mike, and Madison and Reagan, close as they grieve the loss of an incredibly special girl. Her absence will be felt for all eternity.

Kinley, thank you for bringing your mama and our team so close. It is because of you, baby girl, that so many parvo puppies had the whisper of faith and love; that so many after you found their loving forever homes; that your mama became ore than “just a friend” to our rescue - she became family; and that she continues to stand at the ready for those most vulnerable.

You changed lives; you saved lives.

Find Diesel and Destiny and Dakota and Honey Bun… find The Mamas (Maple)… find them all. They’re waiting for you, beautiful girl.

And until we meet again over the rainbow bridge, thank you for being one of the greatest lessons and blessings; and thank you for choosing your mama 10 years ago.

🏥 SQ**RT UPDATE! 🏥

Well, we got his radiology report back from the specialists and it’s remarkably unremarkable. Sigh. As suspected, he does NOT have Rickets. Rather, the results from the DVM suggest that his legs are just extremely deformed from poor breeding. His abdominal discomfort is very similar to Cordelia’s - his skeletal frame is presently too small for his internal organs, so he just feels a lot of pressure. And, as mentioned previously, he has a severe hypoplastic trachea - which means his airway is extremely small. Lastly, while we were told he had hydrocephalus at birth, we were never provided records confirming this. The clinical team isn’t certain that was what was going on (although, certainly can’t rule it out); but, there is definitely something neurologically different about him. He’s a medical case and likely always will be - but it’s not because he’s “sick;” rather, a poor result of fad breeding of “micro,” “XL,” and “exotic” bullies that have mixed some of the worst physical qualities of bulldogs while hyperexaggerating said qualities (such as short frames with wide shoulders).

So how do we proceed?

Because we never received his medical records nor shot history, we had to proceed with re-vaccinating him yesterday. Given a supposed hydrocephalus diagnosis with seizure activity at birth, we proceeded with extreme caution, only doing two vaccines yesterday and had medication ready in the event we needed to intervene. Fortunately, he had no reaction! 🎉 We are exploring different splint options to help correct his front legs and have started him on the similar supplement and treatment plan Cordi was on. He eats exclusively softened food in a slow feeder, because otherwise he inhales his food and chokes. And we’re working on ways to help support his frame better to ease the discomfort in his abdomen. We’ve “been here, done that” before, and we’re hoping for similar, positive outcomes.

We had a ❤️🤍💙 SPECTACULAR 💙🤍❤️ at July First Friday hosted by ! Available kiddos Montana, Briar, Zadie, Kona, Java, and Santos drew *quite* the crowd - and we even had friends from out of town *intentionally* drive in to meet our team and our dogs! 🥰 While we’re sad these guys are still looking for homes (some for several months now), we do love spreading positive pit bull publicity in our community! We’ve been keeping a secret… but now we need YOUR HELP!

We’ve previously mentioned that our Executive Director’s “real job” (lol) is as a Grants Director for a large San Antonio nonprofit supporting the homeless. One of the agency’s programmatic elements is Street Outreach, connecting individuals in encampments and other outdoor spaces with resources. And, as we shared when we welcomed Nugget, one of the Outreach Coordinators is a licensed wildlife rehabber and has a heart of gold for animals in need. 💛 Well… about 3 weeks ago, she found a dumped pibble mommy dog with 6 living newborns and 2 deceased. One of the babies was struggling to thrive. She had taken in a ton of rainwater and was aspirating.

And this woman’s heart works like our directors’ - act first, plan later. 🙃

We have been working behind the scenes to secure placement for this singleton, now 4-5 weeks old, eating gruel, and thriving! Her rescue was truly a lifesaving effort and SO many coworkers and colleagues have stepped up throughout the way to make this possible.

Here’s where we need y’all.
We had a plan in place for this weekend. Nugget was supposed to come down to San Antonio and Penguin (the name of this tiny tot) was supposed to go to Nugget’s foster fam.

Buuuuut life has a way of working out in other ways (and that’s ok!). But now we have NO PLACE for Penguin to go. She desperately needs to move into a new foster with other dogs who will teach her boundaries and appropriate play style. And even better is that we have a tentatively approved adopter for her already, too. So we’re truly looking for a temporary foster for 4-5 weeks.

We know it’s a call out to the void, but if we don’t ask, the answer will always be “no.”
