This Memorial Day, the Chicago Veterinary Medical Foundation is proud to share a special tribute originally posted by our colleagues at the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association honoring Lt. Colonel Dr. Louis A. Merillat (1868–1956).
Dr. Merillat was a World War I Army officer, educator, and one of the most influential veterinarians of the early 20th century. As Chief Veterinarian of the U.S. First Army, he oversaw the care of tens of thousands of military animals during key campaigns, including the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
Beyond his military service, Dr. Merillat worked tirelessly to elevate veterinary education, support professional organizations, and document the critical role of veterinarians in wartime.
His story reminds us that the legacy of veterinary medicine is built not only on science—but on service, compassion, and dedication.
We thank the CVMA for preserving and sharing this history. Today, we honor Dr. Merillat and all those whose contributions have helped shape our profession.
