“My mind works in the music- almost as if I was trained to play”.
David Cunningham (born August 19, 1986), better known by his stage name Dun Deal, is an American platinum producer and rapper. He is best known for producing A$AP Mob's, "RAF", Young Thug's, "Stoner" and Migos, "Hannah Montana". Dun Deal has also worked with Gucci Mane, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Usher, Trey Songz, Trouble, Young Dolph, Future, Drake, Rich Homie Quan, and Kevin Gates, among others.
Dun Deal started his career as a rapper in 2003, when he formed the group O Boys with his high school friends. They were signed with one of Ruff Ryders' sub-labels. He used the money he received from the label to buy studio equipment and started learning how to create beats. By 2005, Deal transitioned from rapping to producing. His first major production work was featured in a Tyler Perry film.
In 2007, Dun Deal and his production team Planet 9 began producing for artists such as Rich Kidz, Future, Ca$h Out, Young Thug and Dem Franchize Boyz.
While producing on Rich Kidz's album ‘Everybody Eat Bread’ in 2012, Deal signed to DJ Spinz's production team Hoodrich Production Group (HPG), along with C4, S.O.S and Childish Major.
In 2013, Dun Deal created Migos second single, ”Hannah Montana” and was initially skeptical about the song's title, but the song became a hit and peaked at number 56 on the Billboard charts.
Late 2013, Complex listed Dun Deal on their "25 New Producers To Watch For” list and the author, Craig Jenkins commented that "his beats [are] the emotional focal points of whatever album he's on, and his restless versatility ensures we'll be hearing his name a lot more in the years to come." In January 2014, Dun Deal, among his team HPG, was also included on FACT's "10 hip-hop producers to watch". FACT authors Chris Kelly and John Twells stated that "the group's sound defined 2013 with a diverse set of productions".
In early 2014, Young Thug's "Stoner", produced by Dun Deal, got mainstream popularity, and peaked at number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also spawned a number of unofficial remixes by rappers, such as Wale, Jim Jones, Jadakiss, Iamsu! and Trick-Trick. Deal, who has been working with Young Thug, since the rapper was 16 years old, revealed that it took him 15 minutes to create the instrumental for "Stoner" and Thug recorded the whole song in another 15 minutes, mostly freestyling. Later, he commented on the success of the song: "I'm definitely always surprised when a song takes off like that. You know, you expect it to be a hit when you think it's a good song and you make it yourself, but you never know it's gonna be a really big hit.”
Dun Deal and Young Thug continued to push the sound and scope of Hip Hop with the release of “Treasure” featuring Jamaican artist, Zuse which caught deal the attention of Janelle Monáe. Although Monáe and Deal never officially released music, they created a memorable jam session which went viral online.
On April 30, 2014, Deal released a collaboration EP with rapper Rome Fortune, titled ‘Drive, Thighs & Lies’. That same year, Dun Deal signed 2 upcoming producers, Isaac Flame and Goose to his production team The Remedy Production Group who produced, 9 tracks of Birdman, Young Thug, & Rich Homie Quan’s popular, ‘Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1’ mixtape.
A few months later, Dun Deal’s life was turned upside down as he was falsely accused of a crime and held against his will for more than 2 weeks in Texas. It wasn’t until 2016 when Dun Deal and his lawyers reached a $300,000 settlement that he was able to live his life again and share his story. Deal appeared on every major Hip Hop publication as well as local new-stations to tell his experience of injustice.
Dun Deal got his mojo back in early 2017 and produced ASAP Rocky, Quavo, Lil U*i Vert, Frank Ocean’s, “RAF”, Cousin Stizz & G Eazy’s, “Neiman's Barney”, Young Dolph’s,“I’m So Real” off his ‘Bulletproof’ EP, 2 tracks on Trouble’s, ’16’ EP, Ty Dolla $ & Lauren Jauregui’s, “In Your Phone”, “Work Hard” on Migos, ‘Culture 2’ album, and several others.
Dun Deal is now the CEO of 4NXChange Records in partnership with Atlanta Hawks point guard, Dennis Schroder. BlueFaceBally is the first artist on the roster and he released his debut project, ‘Blue Face Trip’ executive produced by Dun Deal March 15th to Soundcloud. The 10 track EP also features production from Boominati Chopsquad, Blessed and a feature from Reese Laflare and will be available to stream on all digital platforms March 30th.
