When COVID-19 hit North Carolina, the Duke Kannapolis team and the MURDOCK Study Community Registry and Biorepository played a critical role in one of the state’s earliest large-scale research efforts.

Within weeks, the team transformed an empty bank parking lot into a drive-through enrollment site, keeping participants and staff safe while collecting vital samples.

Thanks to creativity, teamwork, and strong community partnerships, Duke Kannapolis enrolled 1,400 participants, the most of any site, and helped generate data that informed real-life decisions during a time of uncertainty.

👋 Meet Joy. Ever since Duke opened a research site in Kannapolis years ago, she has signed up for studies. So far, Joy has participated in the MURDOCK Study, a study about preventing Alzheimer’s disease, and now the BACk Study.

The first time she heard about BACk, Joy could not apply because her back didn’t hurt.

“But the second time they reached out, my back had been hurting, and I was able to join the study,” she said. "If I can make a difference and add to the data, I wanted to do that.”

An accountant for small business in Charlotte started by her grandfather, Joy enjoys spending time with her husband and their beloved dog and cat.

E Belleau is a clinical social worker who joined the BACk Study because of a belief in the importance of research, saying that even if study outcomes will not directly benefit participants, the research holds promise for future generations.
