Read Isaiah 58: 3 ‘We have fasted before you!’ they say. ‘Why aren’t you impressed? We have been very hard on ourselves, and you don’t even notice it!’ “I will tell you why!” I respond. It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves. Even while you fast, you keep oppressing your workers.”
Fasting and Prayer is observed to focus our attention on God, not to get God to notice us. Fasting and Prayer should be focused upon pleasing God not trying to get God to be pleased with us. There is a huge difference. Our passion should be centered in loving God. We will look at the ten commandments differently if we see them in light of a relationship. We don’t keep the law because we fear the consequences—though sin always does have consequences, but we observe the ten commandments because we simply love God. If you love God you would never take His name in vain, and observing the Sabbath day would not be a chore because you can’t wait to spend time with someone you love---if we really loved God then we couldn’t wait to get to a worship service.
