We are witnessing a staggering decline in student reading habits. 😐

Since 2004, the number of 13-year-olds who "hardly ever" read for fun has nearly doubled. When students stop reading for pleasure, they lose the vocabulary, stamina, and empathy needed to succeed across the entire K-12 curriculum.

But here is the good news: We can reverse this trend. πŸ˜ƒ

🧐 Research shows that moving a student from reading a few minutes a day to a consistent, high-volume habit exposes them to millions of words their peers are missing.

An intentional, school-wide Culture of Reading is the essential intervention needed to save the habit of reading before it disappears entirely.

It’s time to bridge the achievement gap by addressing the engagement cliff and BookBreak is here to support you.

Comics count! πŸ“šπŸ’₯

Judd Winick was one of our fabulous authors this year for BookBreak, and he shared how comic books helped shape him as a reader, storyteller, and creator. In fact, he admitted he wasn’t much of a traditional book reader as a kid. But comics changed everything.

Through superheroes, heroes vs. villains, and visual storytelling, Judd explained how comics helped him learn to read, sparked his imagination, and even helped shape his sense of right and wrong.

A powerful reminder for students, families, and educators that graphic novels and comics can be a meaningful gateway to literacy, creativity, and a lifelong love of stories. πŸ’›

Is your school doing literacy initiatives, or are you being a community of readers?

A true Culture of Reading is more than a single day on the calendar or a one-off author visit.

It is the invisible DNA of your school.

It is the difference between a special occasion and a daily reality where students genuinely look forward to reading for pleasure.

In a thriving reading culture:

βœ… Reading is modeled by every teacher, not just the English department.

βœ… Excitement for new books is reflected in the hallways.

βœ… Students see reading as a social experience and a core part of who they are.

We believe every child deserves a community that inspires them to love reading.

BookBreak is here to help you move beyond isolated events and into a true Culture of Reading. Get info HERE: https://bit.ly/4xfQg8T
