Elizabeth Blackwell was born on Feb 3, 1821 in England. Her family moved to America (Cincinnati) in 1832 where her father Samuel, a sugar refiner, Quaker, and anti-slavery activist past. Liz was inspired to study medicine when a dying friend stated her condition may have been better if she’d been treated by a woman. She was mentored by two southern physicians was rejected by many colleges but was later jokingly accepted to Geneva College in NY where she discriminated against. Elizabeth graduated 1st in her class in 1849. She studied more in Paris and later returned to NY where she opened a small clinic for poor women in 1857.
