Chicagoland Exotic Animal Rescue - CLEAR

Little old lady Kerfuffle the Quaker Parrot/Monk Parakeet was found as a stray in Edgewater, desperate for help- and we soon learned why: Kerfuffle only has one leg, an old injury that would have made life in the wilds of the city difficult, but hasn't stopped her from living her best life since coming to us.

Many people commented that we should have "left her outside" or "let her go back to her flock," which provides an excellent opportunity for education! Quaker Parrots are non-native and have made their home in parts of Chicago, but there are no established flocks in Edgewater or the north side. Much like the difference in temperament between feral cats and housecats, Quaker parrots will exhibit distinct behaviors that our volunteers can easily differentiate. We are able to determine when a bird is used to living the outdoor flock life vs. one who depends on humans for care. Kerfuffle was CLEARly (get it?) the latter; as these pictures will attest! While we have received occasional calls about the flocks of Quakers, we prioritize birds that originate/are born to the pet trade.

When new foster mom Annie started volunteering for us earlier this year, she came to CLEAR with lots of bird mom experience, and we knew Kerfuffle would benefit from her expertise. To no one's surprise, Kerfuffle has moved in permanently, is safe, happy, and thriving both in an individualized special needs enclosure and beyond. Just look at those human-centric behaviors- this is no feral Quaker! Best wishes, Annie and Yousef!
