See Me 4 Me
SeeMe4Me is a narrative change campaign that challenges us to view each other differently and redefine our perceptions of one another. This social awareness effort allows people to reject the perceptions formed of them, and to demand that they be seen for who they really are by proclaiming: “Your perception is not my reality.”
For people to thrive – especially people of color – we must elevate their accurate and holistic narrative, which uplifts their humanity, amplifies their voices and expresses their truth about themselves, this society and their place in it.
Too often we are judged by and make judgments of others based on our own color-coded biases. What we think about someone – especially someone who looks different from us – is formed by the immediate impressions we form when we see them – how they look, how they dress, their skin color, how they talk. We base our opinions and subsequent actions, on these superficial characteristics that do not accurately convey who a person really is.
The impressions we form drive how we treat each other. They influence policies we make that support or hinder our access to opportunities for advancement; and the decisions that maintain or restrict our civil rights. These impressions inform whether we help or hurt each other, or simply look the other way. These often quick impressions can even influence whether or not we take someone’s life out of fear, bias or malice towards who we perceive them to be.
