Last night, we debated the use of taxpayer dollars for utility, major home repair, and mortgage assistance. I believe municipalities should not cover these costs, as it sets a precedent that could obligate us to a lifetime of general assistance. Alderman DeJuan Gardner articulated this well, emphasizing our role in supporting residents without providing ongoing general assistance. I was NOT allowed to speak but wanted to offer the available funded programs through CEDA, LiHeap, ComED, Nicor, Thornton Township, and the Salvation Army. Normally, home owners have insurance to help with repairs to the home.

Unfortunately, this discussion wasn’t recorded, raising concerns about transparency. Next week, there will be a meeting to potentially revoke my ability to stream live from my desk.
