It's official. On Dec. 4, 2015, the governor signed the bill to repeal the 35-year-old social security offset. Many thanks to AARP, Rep. Cassidy and Sen. LET'S MAKE HISTORY -- We can end at least one form of age discrimination. On Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015, the Illinois House of Representatives is supposed to vote on HB1285 to repeal the Social Security offset -- which has been denying unemployment benefits to older workers since 1980. 35 years. The Senate passed the legislation UNANIMOUSLY on Nov. 10. If it passes and the governor signs it, older workers on social security will finally receive their full unemployment benefits. Illinois is the only state that still enforces this provision. If you're a state representative, vote YES on HB1285. If you're an Illinois resident, ask you state representative to vote YES on HB1285. Not sure who your representative in Springfield is? Go to www.ilga.gov. Click on Legislator Lookup under Additional Resources (second column on my screen) then click on the MOBILE app and follow the prompts.
