A major announcement:

After almost a decade, it is time for BooksFirst! to close.

With only volunteers, and zero funding, BooksFirst! has succeeded in collecting and delivering over 75k kids' book to 62 Chicago Public Schools in desperate need of them.

We are grateful for every educator and every heartfelt supporter of Chicago's children for their big hearts and their generosity.

Please continue to use your kindness and empathy to help children in whatever way you can...be it volunteering at an underserved school, doing a book drive for a school without a library, or collecting warm winter gear for them.

One caring adult can change a child's life...

one book can ignite a lifelong love of reading...

one warm coat can help a child go to school.

We wish all of you happiness.

Our Story

BooksFirst! is regular people--a collaboration of a handful of Chicago area moms who use their own time and homes to receive gently loved kids’ books which are then delivered by wonderful volunteers to Chicago Public Schools whose students are predominantly low income, and many are homeless.

We can’t lose funding...we don’t have any! We aren’t a 501c3 because we want to focus on our passion: Books to kids who need them...not on fundraising. Using our page to connect to parents and our trusty flyer, we’ve received and delivered over 75,000 gently loved kids books to 50 Chicago Public Schools. We are thrilled (and frankly, somewhat amazed!) that with no resources other than determination, book donors and volunteers, 19,000 of Chicago’s most underserved public school kids now have the books they need.

Ways to help include: posting our flyer, delivering books, organizing a book drive at your school or within your community and, most grubby but bicep building, becoming a BooksFirst drop off site.
