Luka got his new kidney today! The surgery went well with no complications. Peter, his amazing donor, is also doing well and was up walking several hours after the procedure. We are amazed by how much our life has changed in a matter of hours. Thank you for your prayers!

We have some exciting news to share! Luka’s uncle, Peter Smith, has been approved to be his kidney donor and surgery is scheduled for this Friday at 7am! Please be in prayer for both of them and that Luka accepts the new kidney with no complications.

Thank you for sharing, liking posts and praying that Luka will find his perfect donor. If you reached out to get tested, please know that we are so grateful for your willingness to learn about living donation and get tested.

Luka will now get to experience more life because of this amazing gift Peter is giving him!

Most mornings, Luka wakes up smiling and is ready to play! He loves taking walks and playing with the neighbors who are like sisters. He has a fascination with cords, cables and electronics and can sit for long stretches of time studying a phone charger.

There are only two treatments for people living with kidney failure: dialysis or transplant. Luka is currently on dialysis and must do these treatments to keep him alive until he finds a donor.

His name means “bringer of light” and Luka lives up to his name. God has given our courageous and loveable son, Luka Lame, unique strength. Despite his illness, he loves to dance, smile, wave at strangers, and play peek-a-boo. He hides his disease well and lives life to its fullest each day.

The wait times to get a kidney from a deceased donor average 3-5 years or longer. Luka’s doctors and transplant team have advised us to find a living donor which will help him get “off the list” sooner and on to living his life. A kidney from a living donor often has better outcomes, averaging 15 to 20 years or more versus 8-12 years for a deceased donor kidney.

When we moved to Cincinnati during Luka’s pregnancy, we didn’t know anyone. We started attending Grace Evangelical Free Church and they’ve become our family here. They’ve cared deeply for us and become our closest friends.

“Dialysis isn’t living, it’s existing”. Dialysis treatments are keeping Luka alive but are hard on his body, time-consuming, and significantly impact his quality of life. A new kidney will allow him to get off dialysis.
