Trees by Joyce Kilmer
Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees” is one of those rare poems that says something simple, but leaves behind a deep and lasting feeling. First published in 1913, the poem celebrates the quiet beauty of a tree, but it is really about something larger: the mystery of creation itself. Kilmer looks at a tree not as an ordinary object of nature, but as a living poem — rooted in the earth, reaching toward the sky, touched by rain, snow, birds, sunlight, and prayer. In just a few short lines, he turns a tree into a symbol of life, faith, humility, and wonder.
The beauty of the poem lies in its gentle personification. The tree has a “hungry mouth” drinking from the earth, “leafy arms” lifted in prayer, and a “bosom” touched by snow. These images make the tree feel almost human, but also sacred. It lives quietly through the seasons, accepts rain and snow without complaint, shelters birds, and stands in silent devotion. Kilmer suggests that nature does not need to speak loudly to be beautiful. A tree’s stillness, endurance, and grace are themselves a kind of prayer.
The final lines give the poem its unforgettable power: “Poems are made by fools like me, / But only God can make a tree.” Here, Kilmer places human art beside divine creation, and admits that even the most beautiful poem cannot equal the living miracle of nature. The poem is humble, musical, and deeply comforting. It reminds us to look again at the ordinary things around us — a tree, a bird’s nest, falling rain — and realize that the world is full of quiet miracles we often pass without noticing.
