Socialization isn’t about saying hello to every dog.

One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is that a “socialized” dog is one that wants to play with every dog it sees or spends weekends at the dog park.

That’s not socialization.

Socialization is teaching a dog to be calm, confident, and neutral in the world around them.

Bruce isn’t working because he’s exhausted. He’s relaxed because he’s learned that people, dogs, shopping carts, loud noises, restaurants, and everyday life aren’t something he needs to react to. He doesn’t feel the need to greet everyone or investigate everything. He simply exists comfortably in the environment.

That’s the goal.

A well-socialized dog can walk past another dog without pulling, lie quietly at a restaurant, ignore distractions, and make good decisions even when the world is busy around them.

The best socialization often looks… boring.

No barking.
No lunging.
No constant excitement.
Just confidence and self-control.

Don’t measure your dog’s success by how many dogs they meet. Measure it by how calmly they can navigate the world without needing to interact with everything in it.

That’s real socialization.
