We had the pleasure of experiencing Northwood Black today, what a course! To the surprise of no one, that course is harder than the pros make it look. One thing that definitely stood out was the condition of the property. With multiple courses available to play, it is for sure a destination. The gaps are bigger than they seem on coverage, but the rough is just as unforgiving.

This got us thinking…what is the best course style to play? Would you plan a trip around a course that is setup with ~300’ holes that take a good shot for the birdie? Or do you need 15 par 4s to move the needle? In both cases, every teeshot matters.

We haven’t played every course in our state, but we’ve played most of them. Love it or hate it, let us know! Here is our list of top ten courses in Iowa, in no particular order of course.

Atlantic DGC (Atlantic)
Stable Run (lAmes)
Walnut Ridge (Johnston, DM Metro)
Wildcat Bluff (Urbana)
Peninsula Park (Iowa City)
Shaver Park (Cedar Rapids)
One Vision (Clear Lake)
Indian Hills Community College (Ottumwa)
Southwoods Park (West Des Moines)
Hummel Park (Forest City)
Altmeier DGC (Coralville)
East Park (Mason City)

Honorable Mentions:

Tipton (One playthrough, thoroughly enjoyed)
Pickard (Haven’t played recently, roast us)
Dubuque (Need to play in normal conditions)
Graceland (Lamoni, not sure on maintenance)
Brookwood (How the course finishes affects the rest of the course)
Spirit Lake LLC (Spirit Lake, Northwest IA)
Beacon Hollows (Cherokee. Bonus points for name alone. Loooong)
Big Woods (Cedar Falls)
Iowa Lakes Community College (Emmetsburg, Good use of the property)
West Lake (QC area, very technical)

Unfortanutely, there are a few courses that we have not played. There are also likely a few courses that we forgot. Which courses do we need to play, and which courses do you think need a little more shine?

Ryan's Park at Red Orchard was a success! With a few bombers to get you warmed up, it was time to shred in the woods.

This hole was one of the coolest teeshots we have seen. Throwing an under stable drive with some pressure to land on the fairway, then a tunnel upshot to finish one of the best holes on the course.

What's your go-to land on the fairway disc?

Hole 13 in Pettibone Park gives you an option off the tee, which you love to see.

Do you go with the wide hyzer with a disc with enough fade to get you a look? With a much wider gap, and a better chance of a bad shot resulting in an easier up and down, the backhand line is a tempting option!

If you opt for the forehand line, (video in comments) it pushes back the gap to hit, and it’s narrower. This line also brings into play the clump of trees in the middle of the fairway.

Halfway through the 27 hole course, how do you attack Hole 13?

The new basket location for Hole 6 looks like a good move. It used to be just long, now it has a cool finish to the hole with a well protected green. uDisc says 550 but it feels longer than that.

Would you rather land so that you have a forehand into the green, or a backhand?
