Born into slavery in 1859, Merrick later became a barber, entrepreneur, and visionary businessman. In 1898, he co-founded North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company — because Black families were being denied life insurance coverage.

He built it.

North Carolina Mutual went on to become the largest Black-owned life insurance company in the world.

Why does this matter?
