Today is the last day with students for the school year across both The Intergenerational School and Near West Intergenerational School, and we already know we are going to miss them.

Thank you to our students for bringing curiosity, creativity, kindness, humor, and energy into our schools every single day. You are the heart of these communities.

Thank you as well to our teachers, staff, administrators, families, learning partners, volunteers, and community supporters for making this such a meaningful and successful school year. It truly takes all of us.

This year was filled with growth, learning, friendships, challenges overcome, and moments we will remember for a long time.

We hope everyone has a fun, relaxing, and safe summer filled with family, adventure, reading, creativity, and rest. Enjoy every minute of it, and we cannot wait to welcome everyone back in the fall.

Our Near West Refining students show that crafting is about far more than creating something with your hands. When students craft alongside older adults and community partners, they strengthen academic skills in authentic, meaningful ways.

Crafting across generations builds fine motor skills, problem-solving, sequencing, measurement, reading comprehension, listening, communication, and creativity. Students learn patience, perseverance, and how to follow multi-step directions while also hearing stories, perspectives, and life experiences that deepen learning far beyond a worksheet.

Research continues to show that hands-on learning improves memory, engagement, and critical thinking. Add intergenerational relationships to that experience, and students gain something even more powerful: connection, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging in their learning community.

These moments may look simple on the surface, but they are deeply connected to academic growth and lifelong learning.

Applying students at TIS recently brought literature to life by creating food truck stations inspired by foods connected to their favorite books. Students combined creativity, reading comprehension, collaboration, and presentation skills as they designed menus and shared the stories behind their selections.

One of the best parts of the experience was welcoming our younger learners to visit each station, explore the different books, and hear older students talk about the stories that inspired their creations. It gave younger students a glimpse into the kinds of literature and deeper reading experiences they will grow into as their skills and confidence continue to develop.

Projects like this show how literacy can become interactive, social, and memorable. Reading is not just about answering questions on a page. It is about connecting ideas, culture, creativity, and community in meaningful ways.
