The portrait in this scene is a cropped version of the 1780 painting George Washington (George Washington and William Lee) by John Trumbull.

Trumbull painted it from memory while in London, having briefly served as one of Washington’s aides during the war. In the original, William Lee stands beside him—wearing a Moorish turban.

That detail matters.

European artists of that era often depicted heavy melanated people with “Moorish” styling—not randomly, but because for centuries the dominant global image of “Black” sovereignty, scholarship, and power was tied to the Moors.

Before and during Europe’s rise out of the so-called Dark Ages, Moorish civilization in places like Al-Andalus (Spain) was a center of knowledge—advancing astronomy, medicine, architecture, and agriculture. Europe didn’t develop in isolation—it learned, absorbed, and adapted.

So when Europeans painted “Black” figures, they often filtered them through that Moorish lens.

Fast forward to the Spanish arrival in the Americas: conquistadors described parts of Mexico as resembling Moorish Spain—pointing to architecture, city planning, and cultural sophistication that felt familiar to them.

That continuity raises serious questions.

When you remove Lee from the frame, you’re not just cropping a figure and avoiding the Washington and “slavery” conversation—you’re cropping context.

History isn’t just what’s shown… it’s also what’s edited out.

“In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” 🫠

They gave you a rhyme. They never gave you the Bulls.

📜 Dum Diversas. Romanus Pontifex. Inter Caetera.

Legal papal decrees authorizing the invasion, subjugation,
and enslavement of the non-Christian world — BEFORE Columbus
ever set sail.

This wasn’t exploration. This was a MANDATE.

And the man they called a “master navigator”?

❌ Didn’t have proper celestial navigation instruments
❌ Didn’t truly know how to read the astronomical tables
❌ Made FOUR voyages and still allegedly thought he was in Asia
❌ Mislabeled sovereign Indigenous nations “Indians”
because he allegedly had no idea where he actually was

The legend was built by the victors.
The record tells a different story.

The Doctrine of Discovery didn’t die in 1492.
It became the foundation of American property law —
still cited in federal courts today. (Johnson v McIntosh)

That’s why they never taught it in full.
