Beyond cancer, deli ham is associated with higher risks of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, thanks to its high sodium content, saturated fats, and ultra-processing methods.

Why is deli ham so harmful? Most commercial deli ham is ultra-processed, often reconstituted from mechanically separated meat and packed with additives like nitrates, nitrites, carrageenan, maltodextrin, and corn syrup solids. Nitrates and nitrites, while preventing spoilage, can convert into nitrosamines, which are potent carcinogens that damage the colon lining.
