Today we celebrate and important day in our nation’s history: the day all enslaved African Americans were finally freed. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation having took effect in 1863, enslaved individuals in the farthest confederate state, Texas, had not been told of their freedom.
Their liberation didn’t come until over two years later on June 19th, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas announcing the federal decree that slavery had been abolished, officially freeing the remaining enslaved African Americans.
Over 150 years later, we mark this historic day by remembering all of those who lived without freedom and honor their lives by ensuring freedom continues to ring across our nation for generations to come.

I am excited to share that the Capital Budget Appropriations Bill, Senate Bill 450, has officially been signed by Governor Mike DeWine, resulting in over 10 million dollars being brought back to Lorain County!
Organizations that received funding include Lorain County Safe Harbor, Neighborhood Alliance, and Lorain County Community College which received over 6 million dollars. These funds will be directed towards remodeling projects, structural renovations, and facility expansions to ensure ensure these organizations can continue to provide their important services to our communities.
I am always grateful for the opportunities that allow me to work closely with such dedicated community leaders and greatly appreciate their collaboration throughout this process!

Today in Columbus, flags are lowered at half staff in honor of the life of Senator Jeffry Armbruster.
It was a privilege to have his family and friends in session with us on Wednesday to honor his memory. Senator Armbruster was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and I am grateful for the impact he had on my life and for his years of dedicated service to the state of Ohio.
