It’s been a hot minute since I posted. Between the end of the school year, move to Alabama, and now the beginning of the school year, it feels like I’ve been at Sunrise Dermatology much longer than the three months mark. While I miss the lovely summer of Midwest, I really look forward to the braggable weather coming soon. I can’t imagine seeing sun all year round!

Be well, protect your skin, and enjoy life!

I am glad to say goodbye to 2024. It was a particularly tough year for me and the practice. Here’s hoping for a better year!

Never again is NOW. Don’t let anyone mislead you: there was peace on October 6th. There are still 101 Israelis taken hostage by Hamas.

PSA: as I am traveling in Vegas, this is a good reminder to be mindful.

A special client | Deanna Mollinaro | June 2023
——
I was not going to take on this project because of scheduling but Deanna eagerly reached out to me and convinced me for the better.

This was one of the most important gowns I have ever made.

I went to high school with Deanna. At birth, she was diagnosed with EB (Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa). As a result her body was covered almost 80% in open wounds.

Deanna was the maid of honour for her sister’s wedding. The bridal party was to be in black.

As a fashion designer, it’s so easy to get lost in the big moments. I was reminded that these smaller moments were so much bigger.

I took on the project because I asked myself,
“If I wasn’t going to make this dress for her, who would?” And then I wondered, “Could they make her feel beautiful as I know I could.”

Deanna had special requirements.
I layered n**e illusion under black net
to look like skin and cover her bandages.
I framed her face with architectural folds.
I made it a separating two piece for ease.
I b***d the bodice and padded the area to conceal her feeding tube. I elongated her frame with seam lines on the skirt. I took the focus away from her wheel chair with the volume. I backed the skirt with a heavy tulle for structure so it would not get caught in the wheels.

These details were so important.
It is the soul and imprint we leave in clothing as designers.

This garment was such a reflection of who Deanna was. Bold, strong, outspoken, and confident. This was why I wanted to be in fashion.

Fashion is a relationship between the designer and the wearer. I was reminded to never separate the human experience and emotion from the work I create.
Clothing can make you feel so powerful.
It can silence any inner doubt and magnify the strongest points within you.

Deanna passed on November 9th, 2023.

I have never worked on a project so special, so important, and so necessary for my own self. Thank you Deanna.

Epidermolysis Bulosa is a congenital condition that causes extremely fragile skin and even mucosa. Even minor trauma causes blisters that easily rupture to reveal difficult to heal sores. The severity varies based on the subtype. This condition can be apparent at or shortly after birth and, I some cases, later in childhood or adolescence.
