Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller was born in Monrovia, Liberia, the paternal grandson of an enslaved African, that purchased his families freedom and went back to Liberia. Dr. Fuller returned to the US at the age of 17 to attend Livingstone College in NC, a historically black college, he received his BA in 1893, he continued his studies eventually graduating from Boston University with an MD at the age of 25, in 1897.
Later in his career, he was selected to work with Alois Alzheimer at the University of Munich. He made the discovery that dementia was a biological not mental disease, that advanced the research of Alzheimer's disease, years before Alois Alzheimer, but was not credited in his lifetime.
