On May 23rd, the Musée de Cluny — Paris's national museum of the Middle Ages — will open its doors for free until 11:30 p.m. as part of the Nuit Européenne des Musées (European Night of Museums), the annual event that turns museums across France and Europe into free, after-dark cultural spaces for one night.
The special program at the Cluny goes well beyond a late opening. Singers from the Sorbonne's graduate program in early music will perform chanted interludes through the galleries from 7:30 to 10 p.m. — plainchant and sacred and secular music from the 10th to the 15th century, performed live inside the medieval rooms where it fits like it was always meant to be there.
The Cluny holds around 24,000 works, including the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, sculptures from Notre-Dame, and stained glass from Sainte-Chapelle. Its Unicorns! exhibition runs through the evening as well. No reservation needed. Free from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
