Papyrus or parchment? The two materials behind Scripture's earliest copies. 📜

For the Old Testament, parchment — made from animal skin — was the dominant writing material. The Dead Sea Scrolls, our earliest surviving Hebrew manuscripts, are mostly written on parchment and leather.
For the New Testament, papyrus took over. Made from the papyrus plant, it was affordable and widely available across the Roman world — which is why the earliest NT fragments, like 𝒫52 (the oldest known piece of the New Testament), are papyrus.

Parchment eventually became the standard for both by the 4th century, giving us the great codices like Sinaiticus and Vaticanus.
